2c – Thrust
Thrust is the force produced by the engine. It is directed forward along the axis of the engine. This is the explanation for a jet engine (not a propeller).
Thrust increases with:
- increasing velocity of the exhaust gasses: it means the more gasses that goes out for the engine the faster
- increasing mass flow: the more air goes throught the engine the faster
A large mass of air is sucked in the engine at the front, squeezed in, compressed to a very high temperature and expelled at a much higher speed.
THRUST = (MASS FLOW RATE) x (CHANGE IN VELOCITY)
Question: Why the released air is faster? Because its temperature is faster at the exit.
Exemple of this: a pressure cooker.
