[Tanger 2017] Wrap-up
Hi dreamers and supporters!
We are back from Tanger where we had an amazing experience with the nearly 80 children from Hogar Lerchundi and Dar Tika. Two years after the first time FbD went to Tanger, the kids and teachers from the day care centre welcomed us and made us feel like home again for the entire week.
From the airport visits to the most exciting activities such as the water rockets, it all resulted in a very successful experience that definitely had an impact on the kids’ growing interest for science and aviation. All the FbD volunteers enjoyed every single moment with them and the teachers!
Day 1 – 4th May:
It was one full and exciting day with morning activities to introduce the airplanes’ world to the kids with some theory and paper planes, followed in the afternoon by a first visit to Tanger-Ibn Battouta International Airport. The icing on the cake for this first day was the visit of one of the Royal Air Maroc ATR aircraft just minutes before its departure, where the crew and airport management team’s kindness allowed the kids to enjoy some time inside a real plane and simulate the passenger’s journey up till the very end!
Day 2 – 5th May:
We continued with activities related to airplanes, with a quadcopter drone demonstration flight and testing the kids about some of the things learned on Day 1! Second visit to the airport with the other half of the children, where they got to discover the firemen facilities of an airport, the check-in process and the functioning of the control tower. The firefighters fire truck demonstrations over a plane mock up managed the keep all the kids attentions and made us all enjoy and amaze. Big thanks to Ibn Battouta airport’s management team for their availability, support and kindness, the kids will not forget the great time spent there.
Day 3 – 6th May:
Challenging space day with nearly all the kids from Hogar Lerchundi altogether. While the oldest ones got a detailed course about life in space, galaxies and rockets; the youngest ones got to draw astronauts and a brief theory session about space. But the highlight of the day was the launching of water rockets, some of them made by themselves flying up to more than 20m!
Day 4&5 – 8-9th May:
The last 2 days were focused around the solar system with some theory and nice mobiles to decorate the classes! We also learned how to fly a kite and made some planes, rockets and other flying crafts out of playdough. Another fun moment was when we added a parachute to one of the water rockets, although it didn’t help with the recovery as it flew far too high into the sky of Tangier!
We also played with helium balloons and did other outdoors activities to encourage kids’ imagination, creativity and soft skills.
Last but not least we had a party at the centre to celebrate the end of our stay in Tanger, with live Arabic music, choreographies and henna!
We have learned so much from them and hopefully them from us.
Thank you all that made this adventure possible, from donors, volunteers to our unconditional supporters Vartan Aviation Group (VPS) and Prosponso. FbD looks forward to coming back again next year!
